Because it is supposed to be a “relationship business,” we were taught to exploit our connections and fawn over recruits and current team members. “The community,” after all, is something that is part of the whole package being sold. It was not uncommon for a prospect to come to an event and, despite feeling lukewarm about the products and business opportunity, to join anyway for the advantage of being welcomed into a fold of smiling, warm faces. Plus, in our team, we had the special advantage of being able to sell the opportunity to be one degree of separation away from a world-famous pediatrician! What mother wouldn’t want that in her back pocket? It's in that way a mother’s anxiety would be weaponized against her.
Navigating hierarchical, paternal and maternal relationships with financial ties would turn out to be challenging. Surprisingly, though, some of the most difficult experiences for me involved the complicated “dual relationships” with my own downline. Dual relationships, or multiple relationships, refer to situations in which someone occupies more than one role or has multiple connections with another person beyond their primary professional association. As you will see, it can get quite messy and create an intricate, complex web.
